He came to the U.S. about 1884-85; to Dubuque in 1888-89. He worked for Knapp, Stout & Company at Dubuque; later he worked at the Milwaukee Railroad shops at Dubuque. Frederick Otto, born 06 October 1853 at Greifenberg, Pomerania, Germany (now Gryfice, Poland); died 05 September 1928 at Dubuque, Dubuque, Iowa (Heart Seizure); married at Greifenberg to Bertha Blank who was born 16 January 1858 in Germany and died 11 March 1918 at Dubuque (Diabetes).
He was a mason. They came to the U.S. on the ship Gothia which sailed from Stettin and arrived at New York City on 22 December 1887. They immediately or very shortly afterward went to Dubuque, where his brothers Carl and Julius already lived.
They lived at 92 Kniest (now Gniest) Street [photo of their home]. He worked for Knapp, Stout & Company at Dubuque. Later, he worked in the Milwaukee Railroad repair shops at Dubuque. They were members of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church at Dubuque. [Otto family photos.]
