They immigrated from the Grand Duchy of Baden to the U.S. in 1840 and located at St. Louis, St. Louis, Missouri. They moved to Galena in 1846.
He was a harness maker. They lived on Franklin Street in Galena. They were members of St. Mary’s Catholic Church at Galena. He was Naturalized as a U.S. citizen in Jo Daviess County Circuit Court on 31 October 1864.
In the 1860’s and 1870’s, their sons Herman and Valentine owned a barber shop at 97 Main Street in Galena under the name “Schmitt and Bro”.

Herman Schmitt, born 1834(5); died 24 June 1895(5) at Chicago, Cook, Illinois; married 1864 in Jo Daviess County (Book B, page 468) to Rachel Steimle (probably daughter of Andrew and Catharine Steimle) who was born about 1845 in Baden, Germany. He was a barber. He was a barber. They lived on Third Street in East Galena.
