Henry Strohmeyer, born in Germany;  married in Germany to __________? who was born in Germany.

They came to the U.S. in 1854, from Neuhaus, Westphalia, Germany (from son Henry’s obituary). [NOTE: There is more than one Neuhaus in Westphalia. I don’t know which one they came from.]

[NOTE: All five of their known adult children came to Galena, Jo Daviess, Illinois by at least 1856, but I haven’t yet found any record of the parents there.]

Johann Henry Strohmeyer, born 28 April 1828(5);  died 09 April 1911(5) at Galena, Jo Daviess, Illinois;  married 11 April 1857 in Jo Daviess County (Book B, page 173) to Paulina Keller who was born 26 June 1837(5) at Seedorf, Württemberg, Germany and died 06 July 1886 aged 49 years, 10 days(5) at Galena. He was a shoemaker, apprenticed in Germany. He stayed in New Orleans for several months before going to Galena. He was Naturalized on 24 August 1860 in Jo Daviess County Circuit Court. He and his son Henry, Jr. operated a shoe store at 180-182 Main Street as ‘H. Joseph F. Strohmeyer, born about June 1858;  married 24 May 1883 in Jo Daviess County (Book E, page 369)(also Galena Weekly Gazette, issue of 01 June 1883, page 3, column 6) to Julia L. Meller (daughter of Mathias Meller and Louise Brendel) who was born about September 1863 in Illinois. [Biography of Mathias Meller is on page 476, Portrait and Biographical Album of Jo Daviess County, Illinois, published by Chapman Brothers, Chicago, Illinois, 1889.] Joseph was a bookkeeper; later he was a salesman of farm implements. 1900 Census: Joe Strohmeyer, page 025, visit 217/227, Webster (5th Ward), Hamilton, Iowa. 1910 Census: Joseph F. K. Paulina Strohmeyer, born 20 February 1861(5);  died 05 April 1870 at Galena(5);  buried with parents.

Anton W. Strohmeyer, born 1861(5);  died 24 April 1905(5) at Galena;  married 29 May 1884 in Jo Daviess County (Book E, page 419) to Antoinette Lemper (daughter of A. J. Lemper) who was born 27 April 1864 (but gravestone says 1865(5)) in Illinois and died 03 March 1917(5) at Dubuque, Dubuque, Iowa. He was a boot and shoe manufacturer, in partnership with his brother Henry, below. 1900 Census: Anthony Strohmeyer, page 200, visit 033/042, Dubuque (5th Ward), Dubuque, Iowa. They are buried at St. Mary’s Cemetery at Galena (Section 5, lot 18). Her will (Dubuque Will Book 131, page 385); not checked yet. Anna Elizabeth Strohmeyer, born about June 1866(5);  died September 1934(5) at Galena;  married 04 August 1897 in Jo Daviess County (Book G, page 049) to George L. Maxeiner (son of Phillip and Catherine Maxeiner) who was born about July 1862 at Galena. 1900 Census: George Maxeimer, page 061, visit 131/134, Galena (1st Ward), Jo Daviess, Illinois. She is buried at St. Mary’s Cemetery at Galena (Section 5, lot 18).

Henry Herman Strohmeyer, born 1868(5);  died 09 November 1937 at Galena(5);  married 1893-94 at Galena to Mary Louise Becker (daughter of Arnold and Elizabeth Becker, both born in Germany) who was born 1872(5) at Galena and died 21 March 1956 at Rockford, Winnebago, Illinois(5). Strohmeyer, born about March 1895, she lived at Rockford;  Edwin William Strohmeyer, born 18 March 1896(8), died 26 April 1953, married 09 May 1917 at Galena to Margaret Loretta Friesenecker (daughter of Philip Friesenecker and Margaret Recht) who was born 28 February 1892(6) at Galena and died 14 November 1972 at Downey, Los Angeles, California(6), he was a shoemaker, [descendant Robert Strohmeyer];  Henry Louis Strohmeyer, born 29 March 1899(6)(8), died December 1983 at Chicago, Cook, Illinois(6), he was a bookkeeper;  Leo J. Strohmeyer, born about 1900, he lived at Chicago;  Anna Louise Strohmeyer, born 1904(5), died (buried 21 November) 1918(5) at Galena, buried with parents;  Gertrude E. Strohmeyer, born about 1905, married Ralph Rogers, they lived at Chicago.

Catherine Strohmeyer, born about 1871. She joined the School Sisters of Notre Dame, and was thereafter known as Sister Leonia. She was living at Chicago in 1911.

Johanna Strohmeyer, born about August 1875(5);  died 04 February 1954(5) at Galena;  married 23 April 1895 in Jo Daviess County (Book F, page 300) to John A. Geiger (son of John and Mary Geiger) who was born 1867(5) and died 11 October 1946(5) at Galena. He was a shoemaker. They are buried at St. Mary’s Cemetery at Galena (Section 5, lot 18). Known children, born at Galena:  Paulina M. Geiger, born about March 1896;  Leonia E. Geiger, born about December 1898(5), died 24 March 1920(5), buried with parents;  Albert Henry Geiger, born 12 April 1900(5)(8), died 23 November 1918(5), buried with parents;  Bertha Geiger, born 13 April 1902(5)(6), died 28 April 1977 at Galena(5)(6), unmarried, buried with parents.

Elizabetha Strohmeyer, born 1831;  died after the 1920 census at St. Paul, Ramsey, Minnesota [possibly the Elizabeth Franke who died 16 December 1922 (Minnesota State Death Index)];  married 1856 in Jo Daviess County (Book B, page 080) to Anton Franke who was born about January 1830 in Prussia, Germany and died 1910-11 at St. Paul. [He came to the U.S. in 1854 (from 1900 census).] He was a shoemaker; they lived on Franklin Street in Galena. Known child:  Gertrude Franke, born about 1886 in Minnesota, married 1918-19 to John James McIntyre who was born 23 January 1878(8) in Canada, he was a bookkeeper, no children living with them in 1930.]

Johanna Franke, born about 1858;  unmarried in 1890.

Joseph Franke, born about 1862;  probably never married. He was a carpenter; later he was a bartender. 1900 census: (single, with parents). 1910 census: (single, with parents).

Frederick Franke, born about 1864. He was a carpenter.

Anton L. Franke, born about 1866;  probably never married. He was a shoemaker; later he owned a saloon.

Paulina Franke, born 1870;  [possibly the Pauline Eiswirth who died 16 May 1954 in Ramsey County (Minnesota State Death Index)];  married 1900-01 to Peter J. Eiswirth (his second marriage) who was born about 1867 in Minnesota and died 01 February 1914 at St. Paul (Death Certificate #1914-021401). He was a saloon keeper. 1910 Census: Peter J. John Henry Franke, born 22 July 1875(8);  married about 1900 to Sena _____ who was born about 1877 in Wisconsin. He owned a saloon.

Mary Strohmeyer, born about February 1839;  died (buried 06) September 1913 aged 74 years(5) at St. Louis, St. Louis, Missouri;  married 1857 in Jo Daviess County (Book B, page 175) to Anton Oetter who was born about 1825 in Prussia, Germany and died 24 February 1896 aged 70 years(5) at St. Louis. They are buried at Calvary Cemetery at St. Louis (Section 15, lot 1038). They had nine children, four of whom died before the 1900 census. Known children, last four born at Galena:

Elizabeth Anna Oetter, born about 1860 in Kentucky;  married 30 September 1884 at Galena (Book E, page 429) to Gustav Schultz.

Henry Louis Oetter, born about June 1863 in Missouri;  died (buried 24) January 1941 aged 77 years(5);  married first 04 June 1895 at Florissant, St. Louis, Missouri to Anna Mary Linnemann who was born 13 November 1868 at Florissant and died 22 August 1906 aged 37 years(5);  married second 1907-08 to Mary Elizabeth Nienhaus who was born about 1875 in Missouri and died (buried 23) May 1952 aged 77 years(5). Hannah Oetter, born about 1868;  apparently died young.

Frederick Oetter, born about 1872;  died 04 September 1892 aged 20 years(5) at St. Louis;  buried with parents.

Katherine J. Oetter, born about January 1875;  died (buried 29) December 1967 aged 92 years(5);  unmarried. She was a bookkeeper. 1900 Census: (single, with mother). 1920 Census: (single, with brother-in-law Herman J. Stuckstede, just below). 1930 Census: (single, with brother-in-law Herman J. Stuckstede, just below). She is buried with her parents.

Pauline M. Oetter, born about November 1877;  died (buried 05 November) 1943 aged 65 years(5) at St. Louis;  married 1899-1900 to Herman J. Stuckstede (son of Johann Gerhard Stuckstede and Mary ______) who was born about April 1862 at St. Louis and died (buried 30 May) 1944 aged 82 years(5) at St. Louis. He was a bell manufacturer [NOTE: the Stuckstede family of St. Louis (originally from Wiedenbrück (Rheda), Westphalia, Germany) were among the most well known bell makers in America in the late 1800s and early 1900s]. 1900 Census: Herman Stucksteve, page 045, visit 075/114, St. Louis (E.D. 374), St. Louis, Missouri. 1910 Census: Herman S.
