Casper Freiburg (son of Christoph Freiburg), born 02 March 1847(1)(11) and baptized 03 March 1847 at Allendorf, Kreis Arnsberg, Westphalia, Germany(1); died 02 November 1926 at Quincy, Adams, Illinois, USA (Death Certificate #2010497); married first 11 November 1880 at Quincy (License #1322) to Katherine Kiefer who was born 10 August 1860 in Illinois and died 01 December 1897 aged 37 years, 03 months, 21 days(5) at Quincy; married second 17 August 1899 in St. Clair County, Illinois (License #9490) to Mary Mueller who was born 26 January 1855 in Germany and died 01 May 1941 at Quincy.
[Katherine was the daughter(5) of Franz Kiefer who was born about 1824 in Prussia and Maria Volkweiss (daughter of Adam Volkweiss) who was born about 1826 in Prussia. Franz was a blacksmith.]
Casper apprenticed as a shoemaker from 1861 to 1864. As soon as he completed his apprenticeship, he decided to come to America to avoid compulsory military service. He came to the U.S. in 1865; he came straight to Quincy and went to work in the shoe store of Gerhard Erner. He was Naturalized as a U.S. citizen on 07 November 1870.
In 1885, he and a partner each bought a one-half interest in the store, and it became known as Metzger & Freiburg. When his partner [possibly George J. Metzger] died in 1888, he took on a new partner and the firm became known as Freiburg & Schultheis, located at 637 Hampshire Street. By 1897 it was the largest shoe store in Quincy.
They lived at 520 North 7th Street. They were members of St. Boniface Church.
He apparently made several trips back to Germany, presumably to visit relatives (He applied for a U.S. Passport on 30 April 1875, and he also appears in the Ellis Island, New York passenger records twice, in 1908 and 1910).
