Henry learned to be a shoemaker at Iserlohn, Westphalia, Germany. He was the first member of this branch of the Freiburg family to come to the U.S., traveling on the ship D. H. Watjen which sailed from Bremen and arrived at New Orleans on (? 20 November 1855). On 28 May 1856, he came to Quincy and worked in the shoe shop of Gerhard Erner off and on until 1862. In 1856 he was boarding with the Erner family.
In 1857 he went to St. Paul, Minnesota; but returned after a few months and lived with the Erners again. In 1859 he decided to try prospecting for gold in Colorado, but on the way, he met a group of men coming back and they convinced him that it would be a waste of time and money to go on. He was Naturalized as a U.S. citizen on ______?. He had his own shoe store at 717 Maine Street in Quincy from 1862 to 1879.
In 1882, wanting to learn about the latest technology for shoe manufacturing, he and his sons went to Chicago for a couple of years; then to St. Louis. He returned to Quincy, and about 1888 started the Freiburg Boot and Shoe Manufacturing Company, a shareholder-owned firm with a factory at 515-523 North 15th Street and a salesroom at 521 Hampshire Street. It was the first shoe factory in Quincy; it employed about 60 people and had a capacity of 200 pairs of shoes a day. This firm was discontinued after a couple of years, and in 1892, he started the privately-owned Crispin Shoe Company. They lived at 1431 Spring Street, later at 1534 Oak Street. He was a member of Volunteer Fire Company #3. He was an active participant in the founding of St. Aloysius Orphanage.
