Johannes Joseph Freiburg (son of Franz Joseph Freiburg), born 11 May and baptized 13 May 1840(1) at Allendorf, Kreis Arnsberg, Westphalia, Germany;  died 08 February 1906 aged 65 years, 08 months, 19 days(5) at Quincy, Adams, Illinois, USA;  married 1866 possibly at Allendorf to Elisabeth Quinkert (daughter of Johann Quinkert) who was born 03 May 1839 at Arnsberg, Westphalia, Germany and died 30 July 1917 at Quincy (Death Certificate #000635).

He apprenticed as a cabinetmaker from 1855 to 1858. After working 2 years as a journeyman, he enlisted in the German Army, serving 3 years in the Westphalia Artillery. When the German-Danish War broke out in 1864, he enlisted again and served as a Private First Class in Company 4 of Westphalian Heavy Artillery Regiment 7 until the end of the war. He received four citations for bravery and outstanding service during the battles to capture the Düppel peninsula and the island of Alsen.

They came to the U.S. on the ship New York which sailed from Bremen and arrived at New York on 25 June 1866. He worked in Frederick Jansen’s furniture factory for 10 years, the last year as the shipping foreman. He was Naturalized as a U.S. citizen on 04 November 1878.

In 1876, he and his brother Frederick bought Henry Brinkman’s undertaking business at 811 Maine Street. They also opened a retail furniture store at the same location; they manufactured their own furniture and coffins. In 1892, his oldest son bought out Frederick’s share and the firm became known as Joseph Freiburg and Son. After 1895, they concentrated on the funeral business. Located at 809-813 Maine Street, it became Quincy's leading funeral home.

Joseph Johannes Freiburg, born 07 April 1867;  died 09 September 1922 at Camp Point, Adams, Illinois (Death Certificate #010262);  married 25 November 1890 at Quincy (License #7010) to Anna Elisabeth Brinkmann (daughter of William M. Brinkmann and Elizabeth Terlisner) who was born 01 September 1867 at Quincy and died 22 July 1916 at Quincy. He was an undertaker; they lived over the funeral home at 811 Maine Street in Quincy. From 1896 to 1906, he lectured at the Clarke School of Embalming, from which he had graduated, and also lectured at many locations around the U.S. After his father’s death, he and his brother Herman continued the family business as Freiburg Mortuary. On 20 January 1916, he was the first undertaker in Quincy to conduct a funeral using an automobile hearse. He was president of the Illinois Undertakers’ Association for several years. He served as Supreme Treasurer of the Western Catholic Union. Freiburg, born 01 February 1897(6);  died 22 April 1989(6) at Willowbrook, DuPage, Illinois;  married 28 June 1924 to Cornelius Henry Klene who was born 20 July 1894 at Quincy(8) and died 1955. Lucille M. Freiburg, born 15 August 1900(6);  died 03 August 1993(6) at Lemont, Cook, Illinois;  unmarried. She was a professional cellist.

Edna Catherine Freiburg, born 11 May 1903;  possibly married [first?] to T. P. Ruddy. She was living at Downers Grove, DuPage, Illinois in 1989.

Mariann C. Freiburg, born 11 November 1904(6);  died 19 November 1999(6) at Willowbrook, DuPage, Illinois;  unmarried.

Elisabeth Freiburg, born 15 May 1868;  died 16 July 1869 aged 01 year, 02 months(5);  buried at St. Boniface Cemetery.

Johann Henry Freiburg, born 18 August 1869;  died 28 April 1914 at Quincy;  married 25 May 1893 at Quincy (License #8482) to Gertrude Vandenboom (daughter(5) of Clemens Vandenboom and Elizabeth Ellers) who was born 18 October 1870 in Illinois and died 17 November 1904 aged 34 years, 29 days(5) at Quincy. Wachtel (possibly son of Jacob and Catherina Wachtel) who was born 28 May 1860 in New York and died 13 July 1919 at Quincy (Death Certificate #21912). Herman Joseph Freiburg, born 18 January 1875(8);  died 02 June 1923 at Quincy (Death Certificate #2010311);  married first 14 October 1902 at Quincy to Emma T. Luegering (daughter of Bernard and Helena Luegering) who was born 28 November 1871 at Quincy and died 08 February 1916 at Quincy;  married second 11 November 1916 at Quincy to Marie Gertrude Freiburg. He was an undertaker and was a partner with his brother Joseph in the Freiburg Mortuary. They lived at 524 North 7th Street in Quincy. After he died, Marie continued the firm with Leo Wiskirchen, and later with Francis J.
