He came to the U.S. on the ship Nimrod which sailed from Bremen, Germany and arrived at New Orleans on 19 November 1839. He was a miner; later a farmer. He bought government land in Cape Girardeau County, Missouri and received a patent on 15 April 1853 (the patent). They were members of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Apple Creek, Perry, Missouri. Johannes Grothoff, born about 1823 in Prussia, Germany;  died 04 December 1883 aged 60 years(5) at St. Louis, St. Louis, Missouri, USA (Book 15, page 350);  never married.

He was a carpenter. He came to the U.S. [traveling with at least two other people who are known to have been from Allendorf, Kreis Arnsberg, Westphalia, Germany] on the ship Maryland which sailed from Bremen, Germany and arrived at Baltimore on 24 May 1854. He is buried at Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery (Section 09S, lot 00PG) at St. Louis.
