Johann Jacob3
Arner (felix2, Ulrich1),
born 05 April 1750(14) in Whitehall, Bucks (now North Whitehall,
Lehigh), Pennsylvania; died 28 July 1818
aged 68 years, 03 months, 23 days(14) in Upper Milford, Lehigh,
Pennsylvania (also Death Notice in the Allentown Unabhaengiger Republikaner,
issue of 06 August 1818); married to Anna Margaretha Kern who was born 29 December 1754(5a)
in Heidelberg, Northampton (now Lehigh), Pennsylvania and died 05 March 1835
aged 80 years, 02 months, 06 days(5a) in Lehigh County,
Pennsylvania.
[Margaretha was probably a niece of the John Kern who
married Jacob’s sister, Anna Margaretha3
Arner.]
On 14 April
1771, he was a baptismal sponsor in Lehigh, Northampton,
Pennsylvania for Johann Jacob Öhl, son of Andreas and Christina Öhl.
He was on the Muster Roll of the 8th
Company, 2nd Battalion, Northampton Militia on 18 January 1777 (PA:5:8:117)(C).
He served in the 4th Company, 1st Battalion, Northampton
Militia from 01 November 1781
to 01 January 1783 (PA:5:8:054)(C). He was on the Muster Roll of
Captain Frederick Kuntz’s Company (of Lehigh
Township), Northampton Militia on 18 April 1785 (PA:6:3:886)(C).
He was on the 1776, 1779, 1781, and 1788 Tax Lists in Whitehall
Township (but not as a landowner;
and apparently living on his widowed grandmother’s land in 1781). He is probably
the Jacob Arner on the 1785 Tax List in Lehigh, Northampton,
Pennsylvania (PA:3:19:161)(C).
On 26 July
1789, they were baptismal sponsors in Whitehall,
Northampton (now Lehigh), Pennsylvania
for Salome Ruch, daughter of Heinrich and Elisabeth Ruch(2).
[NOTE from Jeff
Minnich: In Northampton Deed Book D-2, page 010, there is an
interesting conveyance dated 17
December 1796. In this, the Hon. John Penn of Stoke Poges, Bucks, England, late one of the Proprietors of
Pennsylvania, and the Hon. Richard Penn of Queen Ann St, Parish of Marlybone, Middlesex, England, brother of the late John
Penn, the other late Proprietor of Pennsylvania, through their attorney, Edmund
Physick, deeded to Jacob Arner, Plot No. 107 in Forks
Township, 110 acres in Dryland. This tract had been designated Tracts A and B
in the ejectment proceedings by the proprietors
against the settlers. The affair was settled by mutual agreement - the settlers
paid the Penns a reasonable amount for the land, and
the Penns executed deeds to the settlers. Hence the deed to Jacob Arner. This would make all female
descendents of Jacob Arner eligible for membership in the Daughters of the
American Colonists, as descendents of original land holders. (On 10 April 1811,
Jacob Arner and wife Margaret sold 33 acres of this tract to Peter Maurer and
gave a deed recorded in Northampton Deed Book F-3, page 427.)]
1790
Census: Jacob Aroner, page 273, Allen, Northampton,
Pennsylvania.
1800
Census: Jacob Arner, page 539, Forks, Northampton,
Pennsylvania.
1810
Census: Jacob Arner, page 085, Forks, Northampton,
Pennsylvania.
He is buried at Zionsville Reformed Church at Old
Zionsville, Upper Milford
Township, Lehigh, Pennsylvania
[NOTE: go to the church page for photographs of his gravestone].
She was buried at Christ Union Church
(now Schoenersville Cemetery)
at Schoenersville, Lehigh, Pennsylvania
[but I didn’t find her gravestone; it may be illegible or difficult to read by
now, if it even still exists]. His estate (Lehigh Will Book 1, page 206),
Letters of Administration for Henry Arner and Michael Ritter filed 03 August 1818, documents mention widow Margaret.
A deed filed 26 May 1824 (Lehigh County Deed Book 5,
page 176), selling land that he had bought on 30 March 1811, lists the heirs of
Jacob Arner deceased of Upper Milford:
Jacob Arner, Nicholas Arner, Henry Arner, Jacob Snable
and Elizabeth his wife (late Arner), Abraham Saylor and Eve his wife (late
Arner), all of Northampton County; George Arner, Michael Ritter and Margareth
his wife (late Arner), Michael Beige and Susanna his wife (late Arner), all of
Lehigh County; and John Arner of Centre County. [Note that this list does not include
son Peter, who may have already been living in Groveland, Livingston,
New York. Perhaps Peter had already signed
over his rights to the land. Or possibly it was just an error by the person
writing the deed.]
