He was a miller. They became members of the Phillipsburg [New Jersey] Presbyterian Church on 16 September 1855.

When the Martinsville lodge of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF) was organized in March 1867, it was originally named Callis Lodge #274 in his honor(O). Civil War service: First Sergeant in Company C, 33rd Indiana Infantry Regiment. He received an invalid pension, application filed 25 July 1892 in Washington State; Eleanor received a widow's pension, application filed 23 December 1926 in Oklahoma. He graduated from Indiana University in 1866. He was an attorney. He was a partner in the law firm of Garrison and Orner at Carthage, Jasper, Missouri circa late 1860s and/or early 1870s. He was an Alternate Delegate from Missouri [4th District] to the 1868 Republican National Convention (The Political Graveyard, external link, as of June 2005). He served terms as U.S. Collector, U.S. Post Office Inspector, and U.S. Special Land Office Agent. He was elected to the Kansas House of Representatives in 1881 and 1883; he resigned during his second term “to accept federal office” (Kansas Legislators, Past and Present, external link, as of February 2002). He was serving as Judge in Barbour (now Barber) County, Kansas in 1885. He was a partner in the law firm of Lauck & Orner at Garden City, Finney, Kansas by 1888.
