Johannes3 Arner (ulrich2, Ulrich1), born 1760(14a) in Heidelberg, Northampton (now Lehigh), Pennsylvania and christened 07 February 1760 (Sponsors: Johannes Kern and Julianna Catharina Hoffman)(2)(37); died 27 January 1850(14a) in Towamensing (now Franklin), Carbon, Pennsylvania; married first 28 March 1786(34) to Catharina Deibert who was probably born about 30-31 October 1768 and died (buried 26 August) 1790 aged 21 years, 09 months, 25 days in Heidelberg(8)(42); married second to Catharina ______ who was born before 1765 and apparently died 1830s in Towamensing.
On 20 April 1777, he enlisted in Captain Jost Dreisbach’s (1st) Company, Count von Ottendorf’s Corps (PA:5:3:898)(C). He was on the 1788 Tax List in Whitehall Township (PA:3:19:315)(C). They moved to Towamensing, Northampton (now Franklin, Carbon), Pennsylvania in the early 1800s. On 27 May 1804, they were baptismal sponsors for Catharina Rischel, daughter of Jacob and Fronica Rischel (recorded at St. John’s Towamensing Church(18)).
He became insolvent about 1816. The land of “John and Catharine Arner” in Towamensing [which they had bought 01 February 1805] was sold by Court Order at a Sheriff’s Sale on 12 March 1817. It was bought by their son Jacob (Northampton Deed Book A2½, page 072), who later sold it to his eldest son Thomas on 29 December 1837 (Northampton Deed Book E6, page 615). [NOTE: As an interesting side note, this is the same tract of land which had been originally warranted to his father Ulrich Arner in 1770, and sold by Ulrich to his son Martin on 10 August 1776. However, there was not unbroken Arner ownership; from 1782 to 1805, it had been owned by men named Lampert and Craig.]
[From History of the Counties of Lehigh and Carbon in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Alfred Mathews and Austin N. Hungerford, published by Everts & Richards, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 1884: “John Arner was of the family who came into Towamensing soon after the Revolution, and settled on the farm now owned by Benjamin Peter. He lived and died here, and left sons, Daniel and Jacob, and daughter Susan (Mrs. Jacob Snyder), and Mrs. Moore, of Conyngham Valley, near Hazleton.”]
[From the Brenckman History of Carbon County(G), page 198: “John Arner was of the family who came into this region [Franklin Township] soon after the war of Independence. The people of that name have now [1913] become so numerous that they have formed a family association, holding annual reunions in the township that bring hundreds together from various sections of the country.”]
