Philip4 Aurner (Heinrich3, HEINRICH2, Ulrich1), born about 1805 probably in Armstrong County, Pennsylvania; died 03 July 1877(R) in Jefferson, Bremer, Iowa; married possibly in Livingston County, New York to Mary Dugan who was born 11 January 1804(R) in Pennsylvania and died 18 March 1889(R) in Jefferson.
He was one of the first settlers of Sturgis, St. Joseph, Michigan about 1830-31. [From “Sturgis History”, St. Joseph County Historical Review and Business Guide, written and compiled by Roy D. F. Sowers, Historian (as posted on the St. Joseph County GenWeb site, December 2000): “Among the early settlers were the names of… Philip Aurner, …all came from Livingston county, New York.”] [From St. Joseph in Homespun, A Centennial Souvenir, Sue I. Silliman, published by Three Rivers Publishing Company, Three Rivers, Michigan, 1931: “Among the first to establish homes in windowless log cabins on the Sturgis prairie were…Philip Aurner, …all of whom came in the early thirties.”]
On 01 May 1839, he bought government land in Sherman (now Sturgis), St. Joseph, Michigan (the patent). They moved to Bremer County, Iowa about 1855.

William W.5 Aurner, born about 1837; died 10 November 1879 in the Advent Sanitarium at Battle Creek, Calhoun, Michigan; married about 1863 in Delaware County, Iowa to Carol Louisa Bachelder (daughter of (Reverend) Andre Bachelder and Mary Nutting) who was born about July 1841 in St. Lawrence County (or possibly Herkimer County), New York. He and his family were the first permanent settlers in what is now Turner County, South Dakota. He homesteaded government land in Dakota Territory (now Turner County, South Dakota) and received a patent on 10 February 1874 (reference). His heir(s) bought more land in Turner County on 16 April 1887 (reference). He owned a hotel (Hotel Aurner) at Swan Lake, Turner, Dakota Territory (now South Dakota). 1880 Mortality Schedules: Wm W. “In September of the same year, the first house in Turner County was built by W. W. Aurner. It was made of a huge pile of sods, finished inside with rough cottonwood lumber. The first white woman that made this county her home was Miss Helen N. [NOTE: actually Helen Sophia] Batchelder. This lady and her sister, Miss A. J. [NOTE: Anna Josephine] Batchelder, came into the county with Mr. Aurner, their brother-in-law. Mr. Aurner returned east for the balance of his effects and the first named lady was installed as housekeeper for several days. It is presumed that her duties as such, kept her sufficiently employed, as she found no time to visit her nearest neighbor who was only twenty miles distant. Mr. Aurner and family were the only settlers here until the next summer (the parties taking claims at the same time failed to make a personal settlement)…”

Oscar5 Aurner, born about 1839; died 12 June 1866 at Marysville (now Urbana), Benton, Iowa; married 23 October 1865 in Jackson County, Iowa (FHL film #1255477) to Jane H. (Robinson) Sherman who was born about January 1840 in New York.
[Jane was the daughter of Henry Robinson and Christine Patten. She was married first to Levi W. Sherman, a friend of Oscar’s who had also served in Company C, 105th Illinois Infantry during the Civil War and was killed 03 December 1862 during the Battle of Bowling Green [Kentucky]. She had two children by her first marriage: William Sherman born about 1861, and a daughter. Jane H. Sherman received a widow’s pension (Certificate #52472); Application #27245 filed 13 July 1863. One (or both) of her children with her first husband received a minor’s pension (Certificate #70731); Application #122491 filed 02 February 186?6 by “J. H. Auner, guardian” [which seems likely to be Jane].
