NOTE: Citations on this page are for Arner References.

NOTE: I have not been able to find an Arner family line or family group in the Eastern Shore of Maryland, although there are a few secondary references that show that surname. However, it now seems more likely that some or all of those references were recorded incorrectly (or, more likely, transcribed incorrectly).

There were a couple of Arno families in the Eastern Shore of Maryland circa 1800-1830 (from the 1800, 1810 & 1830 censuses), but I haven’t been able to find much further information on them, except for:

John Arno, in (Captain) John Dean’s Company, 20th Battalion, Maryland Militia, 13 July 1776.

Samuel Arne, married 16 March 1799 in Talbot County, Maryland to Elizabeth Mullikin.

Benjamin Arno, married 26 December 1827 in Kent County (FHL film #014169) to Elizabeth Wheatley.

However, there was also an Amer family in Delaware and Maryland, and most or all of the “Arner” references are probably a misreading of their surname:

John Amer, married 27 July 1752 (recorded at St. Luke’s Protestant Episcopal Church at Church Hill, Queen Anne’s, Maryland; FHL film #013890, item 2) to Susanna Burn.

1765 Census: John Amour, St. Luke’s Parish, Queen Anne’s County, Maryland (page 192, Maryland Early Census Index, compiled by Ronald V. Jackson, published by Accelerated Indexing Systems, Bountiful, Utah, 1980; online database at Ancestry.com).

John Amer, born about 1758;  died about 1799 probably in Duck Creek, Kent, Delaware;  married 01 January 1783 in Kent County, Delaware (FHL film #006416) to Hannah Caldwell (daughter of John Caldwell) who was born about 1756 in Kent County and died 24 February 1825.

1800 Census: Hannah Amor, page 017, Duck Creek Hundred, Kent, Delaware [1 male 0-10; 3 males 16-26; 1 female 0-10; 2 females 10-16; 1 female 16-26; 1 female over 45].

1810 Census: H. Amer, page 107, Duck Creek Hundred, Kent, Delaware [1 female 10-16; 1 female over 45; 3 “all other free persons”; no slaves (although several of her neighbors had some)].

Known children, born in Kent County, probably not in correct birth order:

Susannah Amer.

Hannah Amer.

Elizabeth Amer.

John Amer, probably born about 1794-1800;  probably married by 1820 to ________?. Probably 1820 Census: John Anner, page 027, Election District #2, Queen Anne’s, Maryland.

Jane Amer. [Probably the Jane Amour, born about 1794-1800;  married 19 January 1820 in Queen Anne’s County, Maryland to Levin Dawson who was born about 1794-98. He is probably the Levin Dawson who served as a private in the 38th (Wright’s) Maryland Regiment during the War of 1812. 1820 Census: Levin Dawson, page 027, Election District #2, Queen Anne’s, Maryland.]
