NOTE: There are also other “Erner” families recorded in America who have Irish ancestry, especially in Wilmington, Delaware and in Washington, DC. I assume that they are all probably really “Earner” families (an unrelated Irish surname), but I don’t yet know that for sure. However, if you can send me some additional info on your Irish “Erner” family, I’ll still be glad to try to help research your family.

James Erner, born about 1861 in Ireland;  married by 1888 in the U.S. to Margaret K. Moylan (possibly daughter of William Moylan and Mary ______) who was born about 1870 in Ireland.

He worked for a railroad. He came to the U.S. in 1882; she came in 1883 (both from 1910 census).

1893 Jersey City, New Jersey City Directory: Jas Erner, laborer, 165 Cherry lane.

1895 New Jersey State Census: James Erner, page 112, visit 668/3354, Jersey City (2nd Precinct, 10th Ward), Hudson, New Jersey [also Delia Erner and Annie Erner, both born in Ireland and over 20? years old].

1910 Census: James Erner, page 180, visit 222/366, Jersey City (E.D. 193), Hudson, New Jersey.

They had ten children, four of whom died before the 1910 census.

Known children, born at Jersey City (and at least some baptized at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church):

Margaret Erner, born 03 February and baptized 19 February 1888 (FHL Film #1468658);  [not with parents in 1895].

Lillian Erner, born about 1891. 1910 Census: (single, with parents).

+    James Thomas Erner, born 06 February 1894(1)(3)(4) and baptized 18 February 1894.

John Erner, born 28 March 1896(3). He was a machinist helper for the Pennsylvania Railroad, and was living at 709 Summit Avenue in 1917(3). He registered for the WWI Draft at Jersey City. 1910 Census: (with parents).

Joseph Thomas Erner, born 17 February 1899(3);  married 1919-20 to Anna ______ who was born 26 July 1903(1) in New Jersey and died March 1990 in Germany(1). He was a brakeman for the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1918(3); later he was a chauffeur. He registered for the WWI Draft at Jersey City. 1910 Census: (with parents). In 1915 (City Directory) and in 1918(3), he was living at 709 Summit Avenue in Jersey City. 1930 Census: Joesph Erner, page 111, visit 296/605, Jersey City (E.D. 152), Hudson, New Jersey. Known child:  Vivian Erner, born about 1921.

William Francis Erner, born 07 October 1902(1)[or possibly 1903];  died March 1979 at Jersey City(1). 1910 Census: (with parents). In 1936, he was living at 124 Central Avenue, and working at the General Baking Company in Jersey City.

Walter L. Erner, born 09 August 1905(1);  died April 1987 at New York City(1). 1910 Census: (with parents). He was living at 732 Willow Avenue in Hoboken, Hudson, New Jersey in October 1945. He was a WWII veteran (U.S. Army SN: 32454153). [NOTE: When I ordered a copy of his Social Security application, I received the application for John F. Cunningham (son of James Cunningham and “Margaret Moylan”), whose SSN and vital record dates were exactly the same as the ones shown for “Walter Erner” in the SSDI. Right now, I have no idea what that means.  ]

James Thomas Erner, born 06 February 1894(1)(3)(4) at Jersey City, Hudson, New Jersey and baptized 18 February 1894 (Sponsors: William Stanton and Marion Brody)(recorded at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church);  died 17 June 1967 at Jersey City(1);  married 1914-15 to Florence E. Dillon (daughter of ______ Dillon born in Ireland and Catherine E. Skelly born in New Jersey) who was born 21 October 1893(1) probably at Jersey City and died 26 July 1972 at Union City, Hudson, New Jersey(1).

Dillon, widow, born June 1871, married 1893-94, 4 children, 3 living), page 233, visit 284/546, Jersey City (E.D. 161), Hudson, New Jersey [also sisters Kathleen L. Dillon, born about December 1896 and Mary P. Dillon, born about February 1899]. 1910 Census: Florence Dillon (with mother Catherine Dillon, widow, born about 1871, 4 children, 3 living, who is with her brother John J. “Scully”), page 102, visit 047/094, Jersey City (E.D. 204), Hudson, New Jersey. In the 1920 Census, both of her sisters [still single] and three Dillon “nephews” were living with James and Florence.]

He was a machinist at Hudson Ice Company(3); later he was an engineer at an ice house; later he was a driver for an ice house. In 1942, he was working for Mountain Ice Company(4). He was living at 709 Summit Avenue in Jersey City in 1915 (from City Directory); they later lived at 112 Laidlaw Avenue in Jersey City (from WWI draft registration(3), 1920 census, and later City Directories); then later at 104 Booraem Avenue(4).

Kathleen Cecilia Erner, born 11 July 1920(1);  died 15 December 1979 at Union City, Hudson, New Jersey(1);  married 17 September 1939 to Edward Victor Stillwell (son of Joseph and Elizabeth Stillwell) who was born 12 January 1917(1) at Jersey City and died 08 January 1981 at Bricktown, Ocean, New Jersey(1). They lived at 292 Ogden Avenue in Jersey City. [Info from descendant Sue Stillwell]. They had at least two children.
