Johann Jacob3 Orner (Herman2, Jacob1), born 14 November 1756 in Whitemarsh, Philadelphia (now Montgomery), Pennsylvania and christened 17 December 1758 (Sponsors: John Jacob Huth and wife)(1);  died 27 July 1818 in Maurice River, Cumberland, New Jersey;  married first 27 February 1787 in Philadelphia County to Sarah Schmidt(2);  married second 12 November 1810 in Gloucester County, New Jersey (FHL film #850324) to Susan Cathcart (daughter of John and Susan Cathcart).

He was probably a cordwainer (“Jacob Oiner, cordwainer”, 1785 Philadelphia City Directory); he was probably the John Orner who was indentured for five years to Charles Chamberlain as an apprentice cordwainer on 18 June 1772. He appears on the Tax Lists of Northern Liberties, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1779 and 1780 (PA:3:14:659; 3:15:099,481)(B). He was a taxpayer in Great Egg Harbor Township, Gloucester, New Jersey by 1786 (page 010); in Downe, Cumberland, New Jersey by 1793; in Maurice River, Cumberland, New Jersey by 1807 (page 011).

His estate (Cumberland Surrogate’s Office, file #064): Susannah Orner waives administration to Job Huff on 27 July 1818; bond for Jacob Orner of Port Elizabeth filed 30 July 1818; Inventory filed 03 September 1819.

[Info from descendant Jeff Thompson.] He was a wheelwright. 1850 Census: John Wesley Thompson, page 086, visit 079/079, Maurice River, Cumberland, New Jersey. 1860 Census: John Thompson, page 133, visit 857/965, Philadelphia Ward 18 North East Division, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They are buried at Ebenezer Methodist (now Trinity Bible) Church at Glassboro, Gloucester, New Jersey. Known children, born in New Jersey:

Leverett f.5 Thompson, born 24 October 1833;  married after the 1860 census to Mary L. Eberhardt who was born about 1844 in New Jersey. John Wesley5 Thompson, born 12 January 1837;  married first to Susanna Young who was born about 1840 in Pennsylvania. Thompson, born about 1871 in Pennsylvania;  Carrie E. Thompson, born about 1873 in New Jersey;  Susanna Thompson, born about 1878 in New Jersey.

James Lee5 Thompson, born 20 September 1839;  died 23 June 1864 in action during the Civil War. He was a glass blower.

Manley5 Thompson, born 28 June 1844;  died 22 May 1854.

Catharine5 Thompson, born 24 October 1846;  married to Uriah B. Joslin.

David K.5 Thompson, born 11 November 1848;  married 1872-73 to Elizabeth Lemmer who was born about December 1852 in Pennsylvania. He was a glass blower; later he was a clerk. 1870 Census: David Thompson (alone, in boarding house), page 464, visit 787/1003, Pittsburgh (12th Ward), Allegheny, Pennsylvania. 1900 Census: David Thompson, page 060, visit 137/143, Pittsburgh (E.D. 203), Allegheny, Pennsylvania. They had seven children, two of whom died before the 1900 census. Known children, born in Pennsylvania:  William Thompson, born about September 1877, he was a clerk;  David Thompson, born about July 1879, he was a salesman;  Anna Thompson, born about October 1881;  Eva Thompson, born about February 1887.
