The surname Reist is fairly uncommon in colonial America. Catherine Reist may well have been related to [perhaps
even a sister of] Peter Reist, who moved from Germantown, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
to be one of the first settlers in Warwick, Lancaster, Pennsylvania by 1723 and
who was (or became) a Mennonite.
There was also a Jacob Reist in early Lancaster County (An Index To The Will Books And Intestate
Records Of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania 1729-1850, Intestate Records,
page 095: Jacob Reist, 1750), but I haven’t
done any research to see if or how he was related to Peter.
Coincidentally, when Jacob Ammon broke away from the
Mennonites to found the Amish sect in the 1690s, the Mennonite leader in
Switzerland with whom he had the dispute was named Hans Reist. I don’t have any
idea if Catherine and/or Peter were related to that Hans Reist or not, but it’s
a possibility.
