Catharina Schmitt, born about 1723 in Germany; died 04 August 1781 in Pikeland (now West Pikeland), Chester, Pennsylvania (buried at Zion’s Lutheran Church in Pikeland); married first probably 1742 in Coventry, Chester, Pennsylvania to Johannes Urner who was probably born in Alsace, France(B) and died 1743 in Coventry(A).
Only child with first husband, born in North Coventry, Chester, Pennsylvania:
+ Valentine Orner, born 21 January 1743(9); married ANNA ELISABETHA LUDWIG.
Catharina was married second in Chester County to Johann Adam Stein who was born about 1700 probably at Ilbesheim-Kirchheimbolanden, Pfalz, Bavaria, Germany and died before 03 March 1761 (when Maria Stein “daughter of the late Adam Stein” was married(8)).
[Adam was married first 23 November 1728 at Ilbesheim to Anna Catharina Hueppel. He is probably the Johann Adam Stein, age 38, who arrived at Philadelphia 09 September 1738 on the ship Glasgow. He was one of the founding members of Brownback’s German Reformed Church in Coventry on 10 May 1743(A). He was a taxpayer in Pikeland by at least 1747(5). He also had children from his first marriage, those known: Maria Elisabetha Margaretha Stein, christened 13 August 1730 at Ilbesheim; Johannes Stein, christened 19 March 1732 at Ilbesheim, confirmed 07 April 1751 in New Providence, Philadelphia (now Montgomery), Pennsylvania(8), married 05 September 1756 in New Hanover, Philadelphia (now Montgomery), Pennsylvania to Elisabeth Wollertin(8); Freiderich Valentin Stein, christened 13 June 1734 at Ilbesheim; Anna Maria Stein, born 1738-39, confirmed 26 June 1756 at Pikestown, Chester, Pennsylvania(8), married 03 March 1761 “in the church” [at Trappe] to Nicolas Fuss(8); Elisabeth Stein (or possibly the same daughter as Maria Elisabetha, above), married 29 January 1758 in Pennsylvania to Adam Böhm(8). (Ilbesheim records from Mary D. Taffet; these records can also be found in the IGI on the FHL’s FamilySearch website and on FHL film #193913.)]
While living in Pikeland, they were members of the Augustus Lutheran Church which was located at Trappe in New Providence, Philadelphia (now Montgomery), Pennsylvania, but also had a congregation at Pikestown. On 01 Mar 1751, they were baptismal sponsors for Johann Adam Schleuter, son of Hieronymus and Eva Barbara Schleuter(8).
His known children born in Pennsylvania, most or all born in Pikeland, but most christenings recorded at the church at Trappe:
Johann Adam Stein, born March and christened May 1744(8) (Sponsor: Heinrich Müller); apparently died young.
Johann Jacob Stein, born 29 March and christened 12 May 1746(8) (Sponsor: Joh. Jacob Kittleman).
Johann Christoph Stein, twin, born 25 March and christened 25 May 1748(8) (Sponsor: Joh. Christoph Knauer).
Johann Peter Stein, twin, born 25 March and christened 25 May 1748(8) (Sponsor: J. Peter Stauer).
+ Elizabetha Stein, born 05 April 1750; married JOHANN VALENTINE LUDWIG(6).
Johann Adam Stein, born 12 August and christened 12 September 1756(8) (Sponsors: Conrad Müller and wife); married 12 September 1779(2) to Anna Catharina Hippel [?Hueppel] who was born 10 March 1758. 1790 Census: Adam Stone, page 041, Pikeland, Chester, Pennsylvania. Catharina Stein, born 05 January and christened 15 March 1759(8) (Sponsors: Adam Mosis and wife Catharina). [NOTES: sponsor Catharina Moses was also the sister of Conrad Müller, the sponsor just above. Info from Mary D. Taffet who is researching the Moses, Mueller, Stein, Ludwig, Hueppel/Hipple, etc families. See also Descendants of Adam Moses on her website.]
Susanna Stein (daughter of “Catharine, widow”(6)), born 19 April and christened 10 May 1761 in East Vincent, Chester, Pennsylvania(6); died 05 April 1836 in Charlestown, Chester, Pennsylvania; married 05 December 1780(2) in Philadelphia (now Montgomery) County to Johannes Snider who was born 21 February 1761.
[NOTES: It’s not possible to determine solely from the
christening records exactly which children are Catharina’s,
since Adam’s first wife was also named Catharina. If the Hartman family
biography (referenced below) is correct in stating that she had five children
with Adam, then there must be at least one child missing between 1750 and 1756
(it’s probably fairly safe to assume that she didn’t have just one of the twins
). However, a biography written over 100 years
later might well be wrong; or it could also mean that she had five surviving
Stein children when she married Peter Hartman, which might be the only children
that the Hartman descendants would know about.]
Catharina was married third 11 May 1764 [Records of St. Michael’s and Zion Lutheran Church, Philadelphia, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. (FHL films #387891, -92, and -93)] probably in Pikeland Township to (Major) Johann Peter Hartman (son of Johannes Hartman and Margaretha Moses) who was christened 02 April 1740 at Ilbesheim-Kirchheimbolanden, Pfalz, Bavaria, Germany and died 30 September 1810 in West Pikeland.
[From the Hartman family biography on page 589 of the Chester County History(A): “Peter Hartman married a widow named Stein, by whom she had one son, George. Mrs. Stein had been previously twice married, — to a Mr. Orner, by whom she had one son (Valentine), and afterwards to Mr. Stein, by whom she had five children. Her maiden name was Smith, and she had emigrated from Germany when young.”]
[Peter came to America with his parents on the ship Royal Union which sailed from Rotterdam, then from Portsmouth, England and arrived at Philadelphia on 15 August 1750, the same ship that the Ludwig family came on. He served as Executive Officer in the 1st (Lieutenant-Colonel Bull’s) Battalion of Chester County during the Revolutionary War. They were members of Zion’s Lutheran Church in Pikeland; later, of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Pikeland (now West Pikeland). He was the first deacon of St. Peter’s in 1789. He is buried at St. Peter’s Cemetery.]
[Peter was married first to Maria _____ and had one child, Johannes Hartman, christened 24 May 1762 in Pikeland(7). Peter was married third to Margaret (Metzler) Schreiber (widow of Sebastian Schreiber) and had at least two more children. 1790 Census: Maj. Peter Hartman, page 041, Pikeland, Chester, Pennsylvania. 1800 Census: Peter Hartman, page 782, Pikeland, Chester, Pennsylvania.]
Only child with third husband, born in Pikeland:
(Sheriff) George Hartman, born 05 August 1765(7); died 24 July 1843 in West Pikeland; married to Maria Elizabetha Hench (daughter of Johannes Christian Hench and Christina Schneider) who was born about March 1765 in Chester County and died 06 March 1840. He served in Captain Wersler’s Company during the Whiskey Rebellion in 1794. He served as Sheriff of Chester County. He was on the building committee for the new St. Peter’s Lutheran and Reformed Church in Pikeland in 1811.
