Valentine3 Urner/Orner (Johannes2, Ulrich1), born 21 January 1743(9) in North Coventry, Chester, Pennsylvania (gravestone, photo posted on descendant Debbie Dilks Orner’s website); died 15 April 1818 aged 75 years, 02 months, 26 days(9) in Pikeland, Chester, Pennsylvania; married probably about 1765-66 to ANNA ELISABETHA LUDWIG who was born 1748(9) and christened 15 August 1748 at Ilbesheim-Kirchheimbolanden, Pfalz, Bavaria, Germany, and died 1808(9) in Pikeland.
Valentine Orner, still single, was a baptismal sponsor for Valentine Fus, son of Valentine and Anna Maria Fus, on 07 January 1764, and for Valentine Kercher, son of Nicholas and Maria Eliza Kercher, on 22 July 1764 (both recorded at Zion’s (Old Organ) Lutheran Church in East Pikeland).
He was a taxpayer in Pikeland beginning in 1766 (recorded as Valentine Urner in 1767, 1779, 1780, 1781, 1785 and 1790). He is found listed as Valentine Urner on a Sheriff’s Return listing all Pikeland landowners in 1789(A). On 23 June 1800, he was witness to the will of Lewis Voight of Vincent Township (Chester Will #4824) and signed his name as Valentine Urner.
[From The Journals of Henry Melchior Muhlenberg, Volume II, page 750: “1776, October 19, Saturday: In the afternoon a deacon of the congregation in Peikstown, across Frantz Creik, named Valentin Urner, came with two horses and fetched me twelve miles in my stage coach to his house in order that I might hold service tomorrow, God willing, in St. Peter’s church.....We arrived safely in the evening and it was pleasant for me to learn that this good Christian deacon was the first child whom I baptized in the barn at Providence in December, 1742, and that I had instructed and confirmed him as a boy; and now he is the father of four children and an exemplary deacon of the congregation.” NOTE: Possibly Rev. Muhlenberg misremembered the date after 34 years, or possibly this means that the birthdate on Valentine’s gravestone is incorrect.]
On 27 November 1771, he pledged four Pounds toward the building of a new St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Pikeland(A). He was on the muster roll of Captain Eyric’s Company (from Pikeland), 2nd Battalion, Chester County Militia on 12 August 1780 (PA 5:5:534)(D). When the new St. Peter’s church was chartered on 29 September 1789, he was selected as one of the Elders(A). In 1811, he was one of the Trustees charged with building the new St. Peter’s Lutheran and Reformed Church in Pikeland(A) (at Chester Springs).
